Concerts with Genevieve Lacey, Simon Barker, Vince Jones & Megan Washington,
plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab, Transient Thursdays @ Uptown, & some words I wrote about being a musician in the Australian jazz scene...
Hello! How lovely to gain an extra hour of sleep this morning, and to be indulging in some easter chocolate with my tea without too much guilt!
April is full of activity including a couple of very special concerts, the regular Mondays @ the Jazzlab, every Thursday @ Uptown Jazz Cafe, plus I'll be in the studio with the Sam Anning Sextet, and also a recording project with Deline Briscoe.
A particularly special project occurring this month is Nest devised by Genevieve Lacey, which involves three separate and distinct hour long concerts on the same day at the MRC Salon. As part of my preparation for this concert I embarked on 100 days of free improvisations (starting back in January), with the 100th day landing on the performance day for Nest. I've never performed 60minutes of solo free improvisations in concert before, so this will be a major first for me. The other musicians in the project are Simon Barker and Genevieve Lacey herself, with actor Natasha Herbert, sound design by Jim Atkins, director Daniel Schlusser and lighting by Ben Cobham. You are able to choose whether you attend 1, 2, or all 3 of the concerts. It promises to be a magical and transformative experience.
Last month I was asked to write some words for the MRC's Soundescapes online blog in recognition of International Women's Day. You can find my contribution which details my experiences as a musician in the Australian jazz scene here.

Jazz Greats at Monash - Spinoff
Vince Jones & Megan Washington vocals + 20 piece jazz orchestra.
Together they revisit the sounds of the 1940s as rebooted in the 1990 television series Come In Spinner. The album of the series, featuring classics like Man I Love, Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, You Go to My Head and I’ve Got You Under My
Skin, broke sales records around the country. This time around, MLIVE has commissioned composer and arranger Steve Newcomb to create all new arrangements in a night that promises to blast fresh and surprising energy into beloved jazz standards.
