November 2018 Newsletter

Duo with Sandy Evans, Festivals in Wangaratta, Sydney, Perth, London & Poland, the premier of new works with the Australian Art Orchestra, The release of the Komeda Project album, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more!

Hello!

November is huge!! Thank goodness the sun has finally come out in Melbourne to lift our spirits :)

This month involves some travel around Australia and a trip to UK & Poland, two premiers, an album release and lots of festivals!!!

Tonight I perform with my hero Sandy Evans at the MRC Salon (tickets are still available). You can read an interview Sandy and I did about our new duo here.

Tomorrow I travel to Wangaratta (VIC) to premier a new work with the Australian Art Orchestra as part of their 'Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger Than Space' program, which illuminates stories of peoples return to civilian life post WWI. My piece 'Bent Heart' draws on the stories of four women, as told in the book 'World War One: a history in 100 stories' (Bruce Scates, Rebecca Wheatley & Laura James). It's been a huge honour to work on this project. Included in the program are also new pieces by Peter Knight and Tilman Robinson. We've been rehearsing all week and the music is sounding amazing!! This group is also off to the London Jazz Festival this month to perform the same program, and then a trip to perform at Jazztopad, Wroclaw, Poland to premier more new works by Peter Knight and myself, including my reimagined 'Hurry Slowly II'.
At the Wangaratta Jazz Festival Sandy & I will be performing another duo set, and the two of us will also feature with Gian Slater and the Sirens in Ellen Kirkwood's epic and amazing suite [A]part. Ellen's Art Music Award nominated work (which was recorded in Sydney last month) is now available for purchase. You can read some words from Ellen about the making of the suite here. If you can't make it Wangaratta this weekend [A]part will also appear at the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival on November 13th (details below).

Speaking of the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, I'm thrilled that Still night: Music in Poetry has been invited to perform at the festival on November 8th with Vince Jones & Gian Slater. (Details below).
Last year I was interviewed by memoleaves.com about the work. You can listen to it here.

In 2014/2015 Miroslav Bukovsky and I ran an octet called the Komeda Project - it was one of the best bands I've ever played in and written for - Jonathan Zwartz, Evan Mannell, Ben Hauptmann, Erkki Veltheim, Andrew Robson, James Greening and Miroslav Bukovsky. We recorded the music back then but all my attempts to secure funding to release it failed. Four years on, the music is still as great as ever so, I've self funded the final stages of the process and am proud to release it to the world! Available now through Bandcamp & my website!!

I'm also excited to be travelling to Perth this month for the Perth International Jazz Festival, to perform with the Sam Anning Sextet, and also the first of the Transient trios with Julien Wilson & Sam Anning. We recorded and filmed one of our recent gigs, here are some of the pieces from that night: RainManSleep Cycles & Without Voice.

The regular Monday nights @ the Jazzlab continue, and in my absence will feature two brilliant Melbourne-based musicians, Kathleen Halloran and her trio, and Angela Davis in trio with Tony Gould & Sam Anning. Thursday nights @ Uptown Jazz Cafe continue with piano trios led by Joel Trigg, Sam Keevers & Tony Gould. Details on all can be found below.

The Girls Do Jazz workshops are proving incredibly fun and rewarding for all. They continue monthly and will culminate in a workshop/performance at the Jazzlab in December as part of the Melbourne Women's International Jazz Festival, which runs from December 2 - 9. More details on this down the track.

And finally, I now have the Five Below Hoodies in a full range of sizes. Please feel free to contact me here if you're interested in purchasing one. You can also visit my bandcamp page for more on CD, digital and hoodie purchases. Or come to a Five Below gig! If you can't make it to a Five Below gig, here are some videos of the band for your enjoyment: Fern TreeGrand Forfeit & Illuminate.

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!

Warmest,
Andrea

Girls Do Jazz Workshop
I’m thrilled to be presenting 5 workshops (one per month between August – December 2018) at the Faculty of Fine Arts & Music University of Melbourne

Want to be inspired, get more involved in the world of jazz and improvised music, foster relationships with emerging and established musicians, engage with a likeminded creative community and develop your musical skills and career path through informal performances, rehearsals and discussions?

Girls Do Jazz aims to address the gender imbalance in jazz music by giving young students an opportunity to hear, interact, converse, and perform with women who are following professional pathways in jazz and improvised music. Workshop sessions will incorporate a repertoire of blues, jazz standards, modal playing, original tunes and free improvisation.

The course is suitable for 15-20 year old female instrumentalists with an interest in jazz and improvisation and those intending to audition for Jazz & Improvisation at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music in the future.
