Hurry Slowly premier, more Girls Do Jazz Workshops, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more!

Hello!

Although it doesn't feel like it in Melbourne, winter is surely coming to a close, any day now...
With current low temperatures though, the Five Below hoodies have proved extremely popular, and new stock is due in next week in a full range of sizes. Please feel free to contact me here if you're interested in purchasing one. You can also visit my bandcamp page for more on CD, digital and hoodie purchases.

I've been totally immersed in a compositional phase of late, and have produced two new lengthy works. One for the Australian Art Orchestra titled 'Bent Heart' which will form part of their 'Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger Than Space' program, and will premier at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in November this year.
The other is for senior improvisation students at VCASS titled 'Hurry Slowly'. I've had the great pleasure of working with these super talented high school students on a regular basis this year, and am really proud of the piece that has emerged. 'Hurry Slowly' will premier at the MRC Elizabeth Murdoch Hall as part of the VCASS Gala 'Mythic' on Wednesday 19th September.
In other news, the first Girls Do Jazz workshop for the year at University of Melbourne Southbank campus, was a great success and will continue with another session this month. Enrolments are still being taken. Please see the bottom of this email for more details.
The regular Monday nights @ the Jazzlab, and Thursday nights @ Uptown Jazz Cafe continue with even more trios and projects.
Details on all can be found below.

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!

Warmest,
Andrea

Girls Do Jazz Workshop
I’m thrilled to be presenting 5 workshops (one per month between August – December 2018) at the Faculty of Fine Arts & Music University of Melbourne

Want to be inspired, get more involved in the world of jazz and improvised music, foster relationships with emerging and established musicians, engage with a likeminded creative community and develop your musical skills and career path through informal performances, rehearsals and discussions?

Girls Do Jazz aims to address the gender imbalance in jazz music by giving young students an opportunity to hear, interact, converse, and perform with women who are following professional pathways in jazz and improvised music. Workshop sessions will incorporate a repertoire of blues, jazz standards, modal playing, original tunes and free improvisation.

The course is suitable for 15-20 year old female instrumentalists with an interest in jazz and improvisation and those intending to audition for Jazz & Improvisation at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music in the future.

The launch of Five Below Live (new album), more NGV Friday Nights, Elly Hoyt & the Composers Voice, Girls Do Jazz Workshops,
plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more!

Hello!

My new album Five Below Live was launched in style on Monday night @ the Jazzlab - we had band uniforms and all!!
You can read a review of the album here, and an interview I did with Nikos Fotakis from AustralianJazz.net here.
The Five Below hoodies proved very popular, and there are now only limited sizes left (S, XL & 2XL). I'm considering getting more made if the demand is strong enough, so please let me know if you're interested in purchasing a particular size (including kids). See my bandcamp page for more on CD, digital and hoodie purchases.

Here are some videos for your enjoyment, featuring three tracks from the new album illuminated by visuals from British artist Mark Rowan-Hull, and Commander Chris Hadfield's exquisite photos of Earth taken from the International Space Station.

Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Sydney Con International Jazz Festival, the Company of Pianos, a 'Bell' Award,
plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown!

Hello!

A big month of music is happening in Australia with so many great festivals dedicated to jazz & improvised music!
The Sam Anning Sextet continues its tour with concerts in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney this month. The new CD 'Across A Field As Vast As One' is a stunner - you can witness the recording of the title track here, and purchase the album here.

I'm thrilled that my most recent album release as leader, 'Still Night: Music in Poetry', won the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album 2018!! Here is a snippet featuring the divine Gian Slater & Vince Jones, and here is where you can purchase the album.

In line with the new General Data Protection Regulation that has gone into effect, if you no longer wish to receive my newsletters, please click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email. If you DO want to stay on the list, there is no need to do anything :)

Today I am off to Brisbane to perform with the Sam Anning sextet at the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, then back to Melbourne tomorrow to open for Gretchen Parlato at the MelbourneInternational Jazz Festival, then off to Sydney on Sunday for the amazing day that is the Sydney Con International Jazz Festival. There I will be performing in a two-piano setting with my hero Mike Nock, another set with the Sam Anning Sextet, and doing a Q&A with my dear friend Phil Slater.
Later in the month I'll be in the MRC Salon, again performing in a two-piano setting, but this time with the amazing Luke Howard.
I'm also playing with one of my all-time favourite trios, featuring Julien Wilson & Sam Anning, at the Lido Jazz Room for the MIJF.
Details for all of these, plus the regular Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown are below.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

April 2018 Newsletter

Concerts with Genevieve Lacey, Simon Barker, Vince Jones & Megan Washington,
plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab, Transient Thursdays @ Uptown, & some words I wrote about being a musician in the Australian jazz scene...

Hello! How lovely to gain an extra hour of sleep this morning, and to be indulging in some easter chocolate with my tea without too much guilt!

April is full of activity including a couple of very special concerts, the regular Mondays @ the Jazzlab, every Thursday @ Uptown Jazz Cafe, plus I'll be in the studio with the Sam Anning Sextet, and also a recording project with Deline Briscoe.

A particularly special project occurring this month is Nest devised by Genevieve Lacey, which involves three separate and distinct hour long concerts on the same day at the MRC Salon. As part of my preparation for this concert I embarked on 100 days of free improvisations (starting back in January), with the 100th day landing on the performance day for Nest. I've never performed 60minutes of solo free improvisations in concert before, so this will be a major first for me. The other musicians in the project are Simon Barker and Genevieve Lacey herself, with actor Natasha Herbert, sound design by Jim Atkins, director Daniel Schlusser and lighting by Ben Cobham. You are able to choose whether you attend 1, 2, or all 3 of the concerts. It promises to be a magical and transformative experience.

Last month I was asked to write some words for the MRC's Soundescapes online blog in recognition of International Women's Day. You can find my contribution which details my experiences as a musician in the Australian jazz scene here.
